Your Checklist Before Travelling Abroad for Treatment
Travelling for treatment is different from a holiday. You may be unwell, worried, and in a new country. Good preparation removes a lot of stress. Use this checklist before you leave.
Travel documents
- Passport and visa, plus photocopies kept in a separate bag
- Hospital appointment confirmation and Visa Invitation Letter
- Air tickets and hotel booking
- P assport and visa copies of every attendant
- Digital copies of everything saved on your phone and email
Medical documents
- All recent test reports, scans, and their written reports
- Original CDs or films of CT, MRI, or PET scans

- Biopsy and pathology reports, if any
- Previous discharge summaries and prescriptions
- A short written history of your illness and treatment so far
Arrange your reports by date. Doctors can then understand your case quickly, which saves time and sometimes avoids repeat tests.
Medicines
- Enough of your regular medicines for the whole trip, plus a few extra days
- Prescriptions for those medicines
- Carry important medicines in your hand luggage, not checked baggage
Money
- Discuss the estimated treatment cost with the hospital before travelling
- Keep some cash in the local currency for the first few days
- Check that your international card works abroad
- Keep receipts of all hospital payments
Attendants
Choose an attendant who is healthy, calm, and able to handle paperwork. Hospitals usually allow a limited number of attendants, so confirm this in advance.
On arrival
- Save the contact number of your coordinator and the hospital
- Get a local SIM or roaming pack so your family can reach you
- Ask for a translator if you are not comfortable with the language
